Side Effects of Soy
Soybeans and soy-derived products have become insanely popular in the USA today, despite known dangerous side effects of soy products. Well, maybe not known, at least to most of us. But the industry knows, and they're doing their best to conceal soy's dangerous side effects.
How can you tell? Well, look at advertising for soy products. Unless it's soy protein powder specifically marketed to bodybuilders, you never see men in soy advertisements. That's because soy is much more dangerous to men than it is to women, though it's bad for both.
Here are the three big nasties about soy that no one will tell you:
· Soy has an extraordinary amount of estrogen in it - every 100 grams of soy protein you consume has as much estrogen as a high-dose birth control pill! This is especially damaging to infants, making soy formula particularly vital to avoid, but it's dangerous to men - I believe it's responsible for the recent rash of "man-boobs" hitting America - and women (in whom it can cause early menses, PMS, and other hormone-related issues).
· Soybeans contain phytic acid (as do normal beans and grains if you don't soak them well before you cook them). Phytic acid has all kinds of negative effects on your body, but chief among them is that it eats away vitamins and nutrients that your body has stored in it's muscle and bone tissue, making soybeans actually negatively nutritionally valuable.
· Finally, soybeans contain chemicals called trypsin inhibitors that prevent your stomach from breaking down proteins - so the big benefit of soybeans (the high protein content) is negated by another chemical that occurs naturally in soybeans themselves.
There is no good reason to consume soy products - with one exception: soy products that have been fermented, like real Chinese tofu, tamari soy sauce, and Japanese natto, don't have any of these problems. Several other common foods have similar health effects, but there are experts out there who have put the warnings together for you.

Tips For Getting Pregnant With a Boy Baby
If you've found this article, you're either trying to get pregnant, want a boy baby, or both. So, I'll provide you with tips on how to accomplish both of these goals. Since you're trying to get pregnant anyway, you may as well tweak your efforts a little bit to get the gender that you want. I'll tell you how to do this below.
Getting Pregnant With A Boy Requires The Most Precise Timing And The Most Preparation, But It's Not As Hard As You Think:
Most people will tell you that in order to get pregnant, you need to pinpoint your fertility window and then have intercourse as many times as possible before the window closes, hoping that one of these attempts will reward you with a pregnancy. This will work perfectly fine if you'll be content to get either gender.
However, if you are dead set on a son, this method will increase the odds of your having a girl. Why? Because the sperm that produces a boy is much different from the ones that will give you a daughter. Daughter (or X) sperm are very long lived, but slow. Son (or Y) sperm are weak and vulnerable, but also fast. This provides nature with needed balance, but it also provides you with opportunity.
If you conceive on the early part of your fertility window, you're allowing many viable, otherwise perfectly good boy sperm to die off before they could result in a pregnancy and you're filling your fertility tract with hardy girl sperm that have no trouble surviving for days.
So, to conceive a boy, you'll need to pinpoint the end of your window - this means the day of (or the day after) ovulation. Yes, this technically "wastes" fertile days, but with the right tools, it doesn't necessarily matter as much as you think.
For gender selection that really works, you have to be very precise. You can do this by getting a reliable ovulation predictor (I like saliva because I find it the most accurate) but get what works for you. Old fashioned methods like basal temperature, the rhythm method, and cervical mucus leave much to be desired in my opinion because they don't give you the exact yes / no answer that you need.
Other Ways To Get Pregnant With A Son: Intercourse Positioning:
Without a doubt, timing is essential, but it is not the only thing you'll need to address. You'll want to send the Y sperm to their target as quickly and efficiently as you can because they are weak. So, have intercourse in such a way that places this sperm as close to your cervix as is feasible (deep penetration). This allows those fast little fellows every advantage.
Making Your PH Lower / Becoming Less Acidic And More Alkaline:
Even if you do everything I've already mentioned (timing, intercourse positions), there's still one more variable to address. You need to handle the Y sperm as gently as possible. The final way to do this is to lower your vaginal acidity. The reason for this is because boy sperm can't withstand a high PH. So, to give these guys the best chance, you'll need to become more alkaline. So many couples are scared off by this step, but there is no reason to be. Again, the right tools make all of the difference. And, the best tool here is a PH tester that you can get at nutrition centers or on-line.
Once you use this, you'll know where you stand. If you test and end up being acidic or need to make alterations, don't worry, you can change this. One way to lower is through consuming an alkaline diet. (Yes, this requires a diet for a small period of time, but it will be worth it.) The second way to get into the "boy zone" is by using alkalizing douches (and this is usually more than baking soda.) Now, this isn't as hard as it sounds. There are lists that will tell you what foods to eat and which douches to use.
The beauty of this process is that you can tweak it and change it as needed and continue to test yourself. You can easily see what is working and what is not (most people have the best, fastest results using both food and douching methods).
It is said that if you address all of these variables, you can increase your chances for a boy conception to as high as about 94%. And, you'll know, without a doubt, and without needing to guess, precisely when the time is right for you to get pregnant with the boy baby that you want.

Gripe Water and Your Colicky Baby - Safe Or Unsafe?
Parents who have experienced colic know what a trial it can be. They know the frustration of watching their baby cry and feeling powerless to do anything about it. They also know that they would have considered trying almost anything to relieve their child's colic. They went to the doctor with high hopes that she would be able to help, but sadly there is no magic bullet that can take colic away.
Colic is a very difficult problem to diagnose. The well-known pediatrician Dr. William Sears has said that colic should really be called, "my baby is in pain." While there can be many different causes of colic, what is consistent is that your baby is uncomfortable and crying.
Many parents have discovered gripe water and hoped that this would be the cure they were looking for. They have been told by other parents, maybe even grandparents, that this is the colic remedy that cured their baby's colic.
What is gripe water and how does it help? Gripe water is really a catch-all term for a number of home colic remedies or homeopathic remedies. What, in turn, is homeopathy? This is a field of medical study whose basic premise is that appropriate natural stimuli will cause the body to react and heal itself. Homeopathy began in Europe in the 1800s, and it has proven itself to be a very effective modality. Homeopathy has its roots in natural medicine. Most of the cures are based on combinations of plants and herbs that are found in nature.
Gripe water has been around in England since 1851 with an original formula that contained dill oil, sugar, sodium bicarbonate, water, and alcohol. These days the formulation has usually changed; while you can still buy the original, most of today's gripe waters contain sterile water and a combination of herbs, such as peppermint, chamomile, ginger and fennel. Different formulas are not targeted at specific symptoms; they represent different practitioner's ideas of how the formula should be made up. Because gripe water is more of a concept than a specific formula, it may be difficult to find any studies that clearly state if gripe water will work or not.
Gripe waters work by using a blend of herbs that settle the stomach and intestines. Some contain vegetable carbon, a food grade substance that traps chemicals, preventing them from being absorbed, and provides relief from gas and distention. If your brand contains vegetable carbon, and your child is taking any medications, make sure to take the medication and the gripe water an hour apart so that the vegetable carbon does not prevent the medication from being absorbed.
Most gripe waters are not regulated by the FDA. You can still find the original and many, many variations. Recently there was a recall of a popular brand because the formula contained cryptosporidium, which can cause runny diarrhea. In order to make sure that you find a formula that is safe for your baby, purchase one that is homeopathic (homeopathic remedies are regulated by the FDA) and is endorsed by the Homeopathic Pharmacopoeia of the United States, or the HPUS.
Basic ingredients to avoid when choosing gripe water are: alcohol, citric acid, dairy, essential oils such as dill or clove, gluten, herbal extracts, sodium bicarbonate, soy, and sugar.
The safe ingredients to look for include aloe, blackthorn, caraway, chamomile, fennel, ginger, lemon balm, peppermint, and vegetable carbon.
Does gripe water work? Yes and no. If your baby is colicky is because he or she has excess gas or an upset stomach, then it may help. If it does not bring colic relief, then it would be beneficial to look deeper into the possible cause of the gas or stomach discomfort. Remember, gripe water does not cure colic; it is a temporary band-aid for the problem. Stopping your baby's colic usually requires some research and trial and error using different techniques and strategies.

The Versatility of Actinase Protein Complex
The ingredients list found on the back or side panel of every commercially available food product - with few exceptions - serves as the consumers best starting point for understanding the real contents of each product. It discloses the ingredients that make up the product, sorted in order from most abundant to least abundant. What it does not show is the actual quantity of each ingredient. As such, more people than ever before are reading the Nutrition Facts panel on product labels to truly understand what is in their food[i].
However, where one problem has been solved, another has emerged. While it is beneficial for people to know that their food contains a specific amount of nutrients and/or vitamins, there are variations within those elements that are not captured by a typical food label. This is illustrated clearly when examining protein.
Many consumers are well aware of the importance of protein in daily diet. Protein constitutes the very building blocks that sustain life, from digestion through to muscle maintenance[ii]. However, eating the Recommended Daily Intake (RDI) of 50 grams of protein may not be as healthy as it should be, due to the differences in protein sources and protein qualities.
The variation of protein used in products is almost as wide as the variation of products themselves. Manufacturers may use whey, soy, caseinate and other protein types to fortify their products with protein. And within each of these protein types are further refinements called protein grades such as whey concentrate, whey isolate, whey hydrolysate, and so on. Though the specific type and grade of protein used in a product is not captured on the Nutrition Facts or Supplement Facts panel of a product, it is an important distinction.
The type and grade of protein determines how well the body will digest and assimilate it. Certain proteins such as whey isolate are readily digested after physical activities. Other proteins such as caseinates are ideal for sustained energy and anti-catabolism, and therefore best taken when there will be a long lapse before the next meal (catabolism is the state in which the body breaks down muscle tissue for energy).
One special grade of proteins - hydrolyzed proteins - is used in a very small percentage of products because of its high cost to manufacture. It is most often found in infant formula because it is very gentle on the stomach; it is easy to digest and assimilate. Hydrolyzed proteins are derived from complete proteins oftentimes through an enzymatic process of breaking down the protein into smaller constituents called peptides. The process divides the long protein molecules into shorter molecules called peptides. Generally, the smaller the peptide (measured in Daltons), the easier the protein is to digest and absorb.
Hydrolyzed proteins also owe their popularity to the fact that, as compared to standard proteins, they are less susceptible to denaturing (a process by which the proteins are broken into structures that the body cannot easily digest).
Since hydrolyzed protein is an excellent, natural formula of protein, it stands to reason that consumers would continually look for products using it. However, this is where the challenge occurs. The Nutrition Facts panel on product labels does not reveal the grade or even the type of protein used. To find this information, the consumer needs to turn back to the ingredient list. The FDA requires all food products to disclose the source of all proteins (eg. whey, soy, egg), but not the grade (eg. concentrate, isolate, hydrolysate).
Since all proteins are not the same, manufacturers employ various methods for incorporating them into products. Proteins such as caseinate and soy are alkaline-based and can only be used with milky flavors such as chocolate and vanilla. Another drawback to casienates and soy is their high viscosity (thickness). This limits the amount of caseinate or soy that can be used in a beverage. Whey is an acid-based protein and is less viscous. Whey can be used with fruity flavors because of its compatibility with acidulants such as citric acid and malic acid. A challenge with all of these proteins is their heat instability when they are heated, the proteins denature (break apart). Denatured proteins are difficult to digest and difficult to metabolize. Most proteins on the market fall into this category.
However, an innovative hydrolyzed protein blend called Actinase® could be changing all of this for the better. Because of its molecular structure, Actinase is very dense. Forty grams of Actinase can be dispersed in less than three fluid ounces of water, with a viscosity no thicker than tomato juice. Any other protein at this concentration would become a sold mass. In other words, Actinase allows manufacturers to add more protein to their product without adding the thickness (or, viscosity) normally associated with protein fortification. Actinase is also very heat stable, so it has many applications that transcend the obvious sports drink market.
Yet Actinases appeal goes beyond its heat-resistance and low viscosity. It is all natural, hypoallergenic, both acid and alkaline stable, and complete (i.e. Actinase contains all essential amino acids). Through a natural physiological mechanism called thermogenesis, Actinase also stimulates the bodys metabolism and caloric burn rate. This is very good news for individuals on a weigh-loss or weight-maintenance program, since an increased caloric burn rate reduces the intensity and frequency of fat-storing insulin surges. It is also good news for consumers who want to ingest a good source of protein, but not necessarily taste it, since Actinase has a neutral taste and aroma.
Only a few years ago, learning about protein was confined to simply reading a food label to ensure that the Recommended Daily Intake was being met. Today, however, the subject has become more complex, especially with respect to protein. Consumers now understand that it is not enough to simply understand how much protein is in their food. They should be aware of the source and quality of the protein, as well.

The Nutritional Value and Essence of Different Milk Formula Substitutes
Last 50 years have brought about the most substantial progress in improving the composition of mother's milk substitutes ever made in history. In this 21st century, infant formula manufacturers have continued to carry out efforts to develop better breast milk than ever before. Efforts to identify and replicate helpful trace elements, and to conduct important research regarding the addition of immune active ingredients and enzymes that will make formula products even better, are currently under way. But for the main time, here are some already existent formulas which have good nutritive values.
Cow Milk Based Formulas
Characteristics
• Standard formula used when breast feeding is not adopted or is stopped before one year of age.
• Designed to mimic breast milk composition. Breast milk is approximately 60% whey and 40% casein, Cow's milk is 8% casein and 20% whey.
• Formulas contain at least 50% more protein/dL than breast milk (1.5g/100cc).
• Formulas provide appropriate intake of essential nutrients: iron and linoleic acid.
• Carnitine and taurine are added to most standard formulas
• Nucleotides are added to Enfamil and Similac.
